Embassy Medical Center
Colombo, Sri Lanka
Square Footage: 500,000

This new medical facility is located near the New Kelani River Bridge in the northern suburbs of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Unlike most medical facilities around the world, which rank low in sustainable design principles for consumption and waste, Embassy Medical Center performs greatly in complete sustainability. The center utilizes natural resources, a medical bio-anaerobic digester, community energy resources and the modern use of open air terraces off patient rooms.

Embassy Medical also features an 8-story open air cooling waterfall, mass transit connectors and on-site housing for staff and visitors. The entire facility is designed for catastrophic events such as hurricanes, tsunami and earthquakes. The first of its kind, all critical operational areas are fully capable of providing care during a natural disaster or once one has subsided. By elevating all critical support areas above the second floor level, the building and operational elements for power, housing and surgery are protected to serve the population.

For the immediate community, Embassy Medical Center provides sustainable energy and collection of waste products. The surrounding area is encouraged to use the hospital as a civic building in addition to a place to come during health issues.
