The Grand River Regional Cancer Centre is a stand-alone structure comprised of four levels. The site for the cancer centre fronts onto the central green of the Grand River Hospital and is to the southeast of the campus's main hospital building and west of the existing Kaufman Building. The sloping nature of the site allows access into the building at the lower three levels. Patient waiting areas have direct access to the courtyard formed between the new building and the west existing building.

The exterior treatment, massing and siting have been designed to compliment the existing hospital architecture and site conditions of the campus as a whole. The buildingís aesthetic considers the local heritage of brick industrial architecture as well as the rural elements of fieldstone walls and hand-forged steel.

Provision of natural light to patient areas was a key consideration in the planning of the centre and is evidenced by the large clerestory roof over the radiation waiting area and the narrow floor plates of the upper levels. The centre also boasts two green roofs.

This outpatient facility includes six high-energy radiation treatment rooms, a 26-station chemotherapy suite and all related examination and support facilities. The building has been designed to introduce natural light into as many of the patient areas as possible. Due to the proximity of other hospital buildings, the project involved five phases to maintain continuous operation of existing services throughout construction.
