Magna Centre Multi-Plex Arena
Newmarket, Ontario
Square Footage: 200,000
The Town of Newmarket has developed this facility as part of a larger development surrounding the historic Fernbank Farm site. The recreation facility, with its stone walls and folded metal roof, is nestled in a field of tall grasses creating a modern vestige of the agricultural history of the site. The landscaping of the site connects to local trails. Rainwater feeds a naturalized stormwater management pond immediately west of the site.
The building has four ice surfaces, a gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms and an 8-lane 25-metre recreational/competition pool with viewing gallery. The pool is a key feature of this facility. We, along with the town staff, were asked to evaluate the best lane and pool tank option for the community. The analysis explored the range from 8-lane x 50m combinations to 8-lane x 25m combinations. Through a clearly staged process during schematic design, a program and direction was established with the support of both the community and swim clubs.
Another key feature of the facility is the 1000-seat main arena. A viewing gallery and lounge overlooks the rink as well as the three practice ice rinks. Generous glazing provides controlled views and natural light to and from the building and its surrounding landscape.
