Metrotown Station Transit Village Plan
Burnaby, British Columbia

Part of the original 1986 Expo Line, the Metrotown Skytrain Station consists of an elevated center platform with stairs and escalators at one end. Three-fourths of the platform is enclosed with the remaining left exposed. An elevator core separates the two areas. The station is connected to Metrotown Mall and an at-grade bus loop by a 35-meter passarelle, which is the station's primary access point. The station experienced 7.3 million boardings in 2005, a number that is expected to grow to 13 million over the next two decades.

We examined redevelopment of the station based on five key concerns: insufficient capacity, the lack of accessible paths to the station, insufficient bus loop capacity, the station's reduced catchment area and issues of connectivity to the surrounding neighborhood. Our comprehensive improvement plan results from the analysis of an extensive set of options including renovations, redevelopments and relocations.
