Engineering Building I is a 157,000 square foot facility for the College of Engineering housing the Departments of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. This is the first of three buildings that we designed for the College of Engineering on its new Centennial Campus site.
The 3-story building takes full advantage of the sloped 7-acre site with an informal entry at the ground level that connects to an adjacent parking deck and a formal entry on the main level. The building is tightly organized for maximum flexibility and efficiency. Laboratory spaces with sophisticated engineering systems are zoned separately from non-lab spaces such as classrooms and offices. Additionally, the building is designed as a tour route with labs featuring interior glazing that gives visitors a chance to see research in action.
Materials engineering labs include laser labs, metallography, micros-copy, advanced characterization, image processing, TEM suite, material optical lab, ceramics, polymer teaching and heat treatment. Other program areas include chemical engineering labs and shops, five classrooms, three teaching auditoriums as well as conference and office space for students and faculty.
