Engineering Building III is the third building we designed on the new Centennial Campus. Sited at the northeast quadrant of the campus oval, it houses graduate and undergraduate programs for Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Over eight classrooms, including three for distance education, serve the common needs of all six engineering departments on campus as well as the UNC/NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. The building is horizontally organized by department around a central entry space, a community “hearth”, where faculty, researchers and students gather.

The unique requirements of the Mechanical-Aerospace program include attention to acoustical control and an exterior mechanical engineering courtyard. This provides an opportunity to bring research out of the building in a design that is open to the public, transparent and engaging. Key program elements include 2 wind tunnels (1-supersonic wind tunnel), flight research lab, Dyno lab, Wolfpack Motor Sports Lab (teaching lab for motor sports), alternative fuels research lab, acoustic lab with anechoic chamber, plastics processing lab, a senior design lab with metal working shop and computational labs. Two clean rooms are also provided as a part of the program for Biomedical Engineering.
