New York University, 2031
Strategic Planning Initiative 2031
New York, New York
Completion Date: 2008
Square Footage: 6,000,000

In less than two decades New York University has decisively transformed itself from a regional school into one of the most sought-after universities in America. Faced with the space constraints of a dense urban campus and a projected need for an additional six million square feet of building space, the University required a planning vision and a framework that allows it to remain competitive against expanding peer institutions. "NYU Plans 2031" gives the University a blueprint for growth opportunities that allows it to advance its academic mission with a vision toward its 200th anniversary in 2031.

We led a multi-disciplinary team in an intensive, comprehensive, urban design and strategic planning effort addressing the physical expansion of academic, residential and campus life programs; the development of new regional campuses; and the growth potential of the main campus around the existing Washington Square facilities. Working closely and collaboratively with the university, the community and city government officials, we crafted a process and a plan that establishes both locations and strategies for future growth. "NYU Plans 2031" ensures the University has the appropriate infrastructure and facilities to maintain its academic excellence, creates a roadmap to better plan for future needs, provides NYU's neighbors with a new level of transparency and predictability regarding future projects and improves the urban integration of NYU's physical environment to better reflect the University's own motto, "In and Of the City."
