The Howell community took an active role in the design of their new school and educational model and committed to embracing a variety of learning styles, expanding curriculum beyond school boundaries with a flexible use of space and time, encouraging community partnerships, equipping students and teachers with portable technology, providing credit based on mastery and competence and creating inspiring environments.
As a result, we designed, in conjunction with French and Associates, an academy-based school that promotes college and industry partnerships, project-based learning, self-directed learning in addition to traditional classroom instruction. The core of the building includes a dynamic media center equipped with technology-enabled learning studios acting as gateways to the academies. We integrated principles of sustainability throughout the design by maximizing daylighting, minimizing site impact and designing for effective stormwater management.
