Working closely with the Presidio Trust, the National Park Service and The Office of Cheryl Barton, we developed a historical matrix to document the construction and demolition of Character-Defining Features (CDFs)—the contributing factors to the Presidio’s National Historic Landmark District status—across ten major eras based on significant military events. This matrix identifies the significance of those CDFs visible today and suggests opportunities for restoring others such as structures, streets, open spaces, land form patterns that have lost their visual integrity over time, either through demolition or alterations/additions. With the matrix in place, we then divided the Main Post into seven districts organized around key open spaces. We prepared a series of prescriptive guidelines for each of the districts that help guide the reuse of historic structures while being sensitive to their historical significance to the Main Post and the Presidio as a whole.
