On a site in an expanding industrial hub of metropolitan Beijing, near the base of the Yanshan Mountains and the Great Wall of China, we designed a campus for two manufacturing divisions of the SANY Heavy Industry Company. The program called for a world-class manufacturing center that embodies innovation and symbolizes progressive industry in China.

The master plan utilizes a canal that divides the site from west to east as the office complex's center and to mark the separation between the manufacturing divisions operating across the site. We balanced efficiency and effect by structuring tightly organized manufacturing workshops at the edges of the site and providing ample open space surrounding the canal-fronting buildings to create a park land setting.

Incorporating sustainable site strategies and developing a unique brand image are central to the design. The dynamic buildings are oriented to maximize natural daylighting while minimizing solar heat gain. Integrated wetlands filter the abundant stormwater collected from the manufacturing buildings before releasing it into the canal. Native vegetation is used throughout the site. The design was awarded first prize in the "Conceptual Design" category at the 8th International Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, recognizing its strength in the categories of spatiality, connectivity, originality and sustainability.
