The Shanghai United Family Hospital and Clinics (SUFHC) is the product of a joint venture between the local Changning Hospital and Chindex International, an American healthcare company that established the Beijing United Family Hospital and Clinics, the first foreign-owned hospital operating in China. Part of the Chindex network expansion plan, the SUFHC is Chindex's second hospital in China and Shanghai's first hospital of its kind.

Patient care, comfort, safety and family and staff satisfaction were the key values that drove the design. One of the design goals was to provide a first-rate healthcare facility that evoked a "home away from home" atmosphere. Clear organization, intuitive circulation and wayfinding were important goals as well. We introduced hospitality level aesthetics and natural materials while keeping healthcare needs and maintenance in mind. Overall, the effect of the design is modern, yet inviting with a strong focus on familial intimacy, healing and an environment that supports the dignity, privacy and comfort of patients.
