Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre
Barrie, Ontario
Completion Date: June 2012
Square Footage: 75,000

The new regional cancer centre, integrated into the Royal Victoria Hospital, provides outpatient cancer services to the Simcoe Muskoka Region. Opened in June 2012, the building is designed to provide a calming and life affirming environment for patients and their families. Through the use of local materials such as limestone and wood and introduction of abundant daylight from generous windows in clinical and waiting spaces, patients and visitors are comforted and reassured. To reduce stress and disorientation, intuitive way-finding has been created by locating all the main waiting spaces overlooking a garden inspired by the indigenous landscape. Green roof areas are provided over the four radiation treatment rooms to reduce stormwater runoff and provide patients with views of natural landscape from the Hospital.
