Stanford University - School of Education
Cubberley Hall Renovation and Education Library
Stanford, California
Completion Date: 2009

Size: 95,000 sf

Cubberly Hall was built in 1937 to house the School of Education. An unreinforced, four story masonry building, it was designed by Bakewell & Brown, a firm responsible for numerous buildings at Stanford. Cubberly has remained remarkably unchanged over its lifetime—its basic uses have been constant: library, faculty and student offices, small classrooms, and a centrally located auditorium adjacent to the entry lobby. As part of a campus-wide process of evaluating its existing buildings, Perkins+Will analyzed the seismic safety of the building and completed Phase 1 of the seismic improvements, including the programming and renovation of the Education Library. The result is a library that incorporates the latest technology, enhances research and study, and improves life safety through its seismic upgrade.
