The Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City is a groundbreaking project combining world class medical research laboratories with conference and hospitality facilities for visiting scientists. Situated on a 10-acre campus in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri, the facility immediately took its place among the world"s leading centers for cancer and immunological diseases research.
Funded by an initial $300 million endowment gift from cancer survivors James and Virginia Stowers, the project successfully achieved several key design objectives, creating the highest possible quality environment for research and an interior character that is uplifting, light, creative and enduring. Nature and renewal were the themes for development of the materials palette, color selection, use of natural and renewable materials, commission of glass artists and a metal craftsman, wood selection and quality of light. The project includes laboratories, vivarium, offices, conference center and 150-seat auditorium, library, dining room, residential suites and health facility. We provided all laboratory and interiors planning and tenant improvements. PGAV from Kansas City was the shell architect.
