The Memorial Student Center plays a unique and important role at Texas A&M University. The center is first, a cherished memorial dedicated to honor fallen "Aggie" soldiers and second, a center of student activities on the College Station campus.
We began this project with a feasibility study and master plan that assessed the existing MSC and its building systems, developed programming, planning and design concepts and forecasted construction costs and schedules. Our process built consensus among a variety of students, former Aggies, faculty and university administrators.
The rejuvenated MSC symbolizes Aggie traditions and embodies Texas A&M history and culture. Our design is solidly based on the original 1951 student center and seamlessly blends a substantial expansion with the completely renovated original building. The site plan embraces the university's campus plan, transforming an adjacent street into a highly active pedestrian mall. Increased indoor/outdoor connections, extensive interior daylighting and a palette of natural materials have enhanced the sense of community and increased the level of student activity throughout the MSC. The completed building provides areas for lounges, ballroom, bookstore, dining, activities, programs, galleries and a 24/7 student activity area.
