In 2005, The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre embarked on a major redevelopment to address severe shortfalls in cancer treatment capacity in the Ottawa Region. A two-site model was selected with redevelopment and expansion at the existing general campus of The Ottawa Hospital and development of a new, stand-alone facility at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital.

The expansion at The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre provides expanded radiation and chemotherapy treatment services (from 6 to 10 radiation bunkers; relocation of 45 chemotherapy stations), transforming the existing centre into a comprehensive healthcare facility for inpatients and outpatients.

State-of-the-art technology is balanced with natural materials, daylight, views to the exterior and access to an outdoor garden. This balance creates an environment that is comfortable and relaxing while reinforcing patients' confidence in the quality of care they are receiving. Materials were selected that emphasize the dramatic natural setting of the Ottawa Valley. Sustainable design features to reduce resource consumption include vegetated roofs, rainwater collection for irrigation, ventilation heat recovery, triple glazing and operable windows. Use of natural materials such as linoleum, stone and oak paneling improves air quality for patients.

Working within the strict requirements of the Ministry of Health, The Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre explores the material and spatial qualities of the Ottawa Region to provide a modern treatment facility that is comfortable for patients and an architecture that is tied to its community and surrounding region.
