This 103,000 square foot building houses research and teaching space for the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Optics. The two departments required teaching and research labs as well as administrative office space. Enabling collaboration between the two departments in order to advance their unique field of biomedical optics was the primary goal. Common space for interaction, food service and social activities as well as a significant atrium space now serve this important objective.
The site for the building links the River Campus and the Medical Campus. The building promotes interaction between the science and engineering disciplines and the hospital and medical school. It also represents the opportunity to unify architectural styles and serve as a catalyst for the development of a new engineering quadrangle, an extension and culmination of a system of collegiate quadrangles that distinguish the River Campus.
