With its interpretive Mission Style architecture, the University Center Expansion project embraces San Antonio's regional design influences. It builds on campus design guidelines to help unify the wide range of architectural styles found on campus.

Because UTSA is largely a commuter campus, the center plays a duel role as a lively base camp for commuter students to engage with the UTSA community and a home away from home where the growing residential population can live, learn and relax. The centerpiece of our design is a lively outdoor room known as the Paseo. Located between the renovated original center and the new expansion, it has become the campus hub and center of student life. It is a microcosm of the famous San Antonio River Walk and a reflection of Texas Hill Country culture. The Paseo provides a richly landscaped and shaded pedestrian mall lined with cafés, restaurants, retail storefronts, student organizations, games room, outdoor seating and gathering areas, balconies and overhead pedestrian bridges connecting the renovated and new buildings.
