The Windsor Regional Cancer Centre is a stand-alone facility on the campus of Windsor Regional Hospital. The project promotes the mature landscape of the existing site and provides a healing water garden at the main entrance. Extensive landscaping along the perimeter further integrates the site into its surroundings.
Building components were separated to reduce the scale of the project and natural materials were used to create an atmosphere that is comfortable and familiar to patients and neighbors. Floor plan layouts were developed to follow the patient treatment sequence. Wayfinding is provided through circulation routes along the buildings perimeter garden edge.
The interiors design creates a homogenous environment that promotes health, well being and a positive experience for all users and visitors. Natural cherry wood is used for interior doors, paneling and feature ceilings. Floor materials are natural stone, hardwood, textured carpet and linoleum with inlaid design patterns. A variety of interior lighting including recessed floor lights and low level recessed wall lights create a comfortable ambiance throughout the building.
The facility includes three high-energy radiation treatment rooms, a 31-station chemotherapy suite, brachytherapy and simulator suite and multiple examination and counseling rooms. Patient amenities include two healing gardens with adjacent waiting areas, a library and resource center, conference room and meeting rooms.
