Winona State University
Science Building
Winona, Minnesota
Completion Date: 2005
Square Footage: 172,000

Housed in an outdated and outmoded facility, Winona State University’s science programs were suffering in space that had become inefficient and unsafe for learning.

The 172,000 square feet of new and renovated space promotes connectivity and safety while increasing space and improving ventilation. Phase I includes the construction of new biology, chemistry, geoscience and physics teaching labs and state-of-the-art lecture hall. Phase II includes a 54,000 square foot renovation of the existing facility. Antiquated spaces are updated with new mechanical and electrical systems and old wet laboratories transformed into dry labs, offices, support spaces and classrooms. Creative space planning for science programs and neighboring engineering and nursing programs provided seamless connectivity between the new space and the renovated space. Incorporating local stones and materials into the design ties the facilities to the campus, increases connectivity and building sustainability.
